Cataract Surgery: Optiwave Refractive Analysis in Post-refractive Patients

Key Takeaways

The number of individuals who will require cataract surgery after undergoing refractive surgery for correction of myopia or hyperopia (ie, post-refractive patients) is expected to increase.

Accurate calculation of intraocular lens (IOL) power using conventional preoperative methods can be challenging in the post-refractive population because refractive surgery alters the shape of the central cornea as well as the posterior/anterior curvature ratio. Additionally, post-refractive patients may have higher expectations of spectacle independence and may find residual refractive errors after cataract surgery unacceptable.

Optiwave Refractive Analysis (ORA) measures the refractive state of the eye during cataract surgery and can provide greater accuracy in IOL power calculation in the post-refractive population compared with preoperative calculation methods.

Better accuracy of IOL power calculation using ORA can lead to the selection of the appropriate IOL and result in a greater percentage of patients achieving target refraction and can lead to freedom from spectacles.
