Comparing The Effects And Efficiency Of Fixed Power Monofocal Toric IOLs To Light Adjustable Lenses With Minimonovision

Cataract patients today have high expectations for spectacle independence and quality of vision, and we’ve
seen significant improvements in refractive cataract surgery enabling us to meet these expectations. Not only have we benefited from advancements in surgical technology, preoperative biometry, and IOL power calculation formulas, but we also have a wide variety of advanced IOLs and postoperative management tools.

Our focus today is on Clareon® Monofocal and Toric IOLs (Alcon), fixed power monofocal/toric IOLs that provide good distance vision with astigmatism correction if the toric version is used, and the Light Adjustable Lens™ (LAL; RxSight), a non-fixed power monofocal IOL. We’ll describe our personal experiences with these lenses and how we currently use them. We’ll also discuss the effectiveness and efficiency results from a head-to-head study conducted by Clayton G. Blehm, MD, and his team comparing the two platforms,1 and we’ll consider how their findings are likely to influence our practice patterns.
