Neuronal Regulation of Tear Production - Medical Backgrounder
Sep 29, 2025

Dry eye disease (DED) impacts approximately 30 million Americans and can have significant effects on their daily function and quality of life. Prescription drugs for DED in the United States predominately target reducing inflammation, although newer entrants target the DED cycle further upstream in the disease process by slowing tear evaporation or increasing tear production through nasal stimulation. Despite these options, there remains a significant unmet need for DED patients who are looking for fast and effective relief8-10 and an opportunity for new drug targets.
